Precor introduced the very first elliptical crosstrainer back in 1995 with their Precor EFX elliptical trainer. They are probably one of the top manufacturers of commercial elliptical trainers today.
Starting around $3000 and up, Precor elliptical trainers would probably be most suitable for the high end home gym or commercial health club.
Strengths:
Cross-Ramp technology - The Cross Ramp allows you to adjust the incline of the elliptical ramp (Note: the incline is different from the resistance) and thus work different muscle groups. This helps to truly crosstrain your leg muscles and prevents you from reaching an exercise plateau.
High Quality Construction - These ellipticals are well known for their high quality components and construction. While they are built to last, you will pay for this as prices start at around $3000+.
Smooth Motion - These ellipticals move smoothly both in the forward and back directions. This helps you work and develop different sets of leg muscles.
Great Elliptical Motion Design - Some cheaper ellipticals will give you a "kick" or "bounce" where your heel comes up off the platform. Precor trainers don't do this because of their design which makes for an overall more efficient workout.
Upper Body Workout Arms - Some Precor units like the EFX 556 offer upper body workout arms. This helps you rev up your calorie burn for a whole body workout. The arms are also designed so that you do not have to lean to use them (leaning can compromise your exercise position and result in a less efficient workout).
Solid Elliptical Warranty - Most Precor units offer lifetime warranty on the frame, 10 years on parts and 1 year on service. This helps to protect your investment in the long run.
Weaknesses:
Although you can't fault the design or quality, Precor ellipticals are definitely expensive. Starting around $3000 they may be more than most people can afford - or really need.
Also, some Precor crosstrainers do not offer upper body arm bars which is a must-have for many elliptical shoppers.
Summary:
While Precor ellipticals are high quality elliptical trainers, they are on the expensive side.
If you're not really fussy about getting the Precor name, you might want to check out the Sole brand which offers you longer warranties, commercial grade construction and 20" stride lengths, for under $1800.
On the other hand, if you are a die-hard Precor fan and can afford the extra luxury, you'll probably be very happy choosing one of these units. They offer an ultra-smooth ride and are built to last you a very long time.
