Spirit Elliptical Trainers are not as well known as some other elliptical brands however they are definitely worth a look. They are produced by Spirit fitness (now owned by Dyaco), a highly regarded name in the exercise equipment business for over 25 years.
Spirit produces a range of economy to mid-priced ellipticals including the the Z-Series and X-Series of elliptical trainers.
Strengths:
- High User Weight Capacities (300 - 400 pounds) - a sign of the stability of the elliptical trainer is seen in how high a user weight capacity it offers. The higher the user weight capacity, the more stable the elliptical trainer (other things being equal). These ellipticals start at 300 pounds which is excellent in this price range.
- Upper Body Arms - Upper body arms can help you increase your calorie burning and get an overall total body workout. Upper body arm bars are available on all elliptical models.
- Up to 20" Stride Lengths - Spirit ellipticals offer up to 20" stride lengths. A longer stride length can results in an overall more efficient workout and a smoother feel for many users.
- Solid Warranties - The warranties are pretty decent on Spirit machines, obviously with the higher end units offering better warranties. But even the economy ellipticals are usually better than department store brands.
Weaknesses:
The stride length on some of the cheaper Spirit units (i.e. the ZE 20) start from 13" which is pretty small and would not be suitable for a taller user.
Also these ellipticals are not as widely distributed as other brands and therefore might be harder to find.
Sole ellipticals are more well known, quite similar in design and construction, offer long 20" strides and have excellent warranties also.
Summary: Highly Recommended
Spirit elliptical trainers, while they may not be as well known as some other brands out there, offer you excellent value for the money - especially the XE models like the Spirit XE 150 and the Spirit XE 350.
For the most part, they have decent warranties, up to 20" stride length and and bright, easy-to-read consoles.
