2) Poor User Reviews - While they are harder to find, the Image elliptical reviews we did find were on the negative side. Many were complaints about flimsy product quality and parts breaking soon after purchase.
3) Bare Bones - Image crosstrainers are simple and bare bones. You do sometimes get a few heart rate workout programs - but that's about it. No iPod docks, no fitness tracking tools, no bright consoles, no adjustable strides, etc.
Summary: Not Recommended
While we'd all love to get a great deal and find a strong, stable elliptical for under $500 - it's not going to happen. And Image elliptical trainers are no exception. In general, these ellipticals are built with a poor quality of construction covered by lousy warranties.
If you have the time to buy one, take it home, assemble it and then truck it back to the store for a refund when something breaks - go for it.
But we're guessing you have much better things to do with your time. If you want a better option, try getting a Nordic Track on sale. It may be a bit more but it will last you longer - and probably cause a lot less headaches.
Where To Buy At A Discount:
You can find a few Image home ellipticals at a discount Online. You can also read user reviews and often get Free Shipping as well. (Just be sure to keep your receipt).
ICON is one of the larget fitness equipment manufacturers in the world and also produces brands like Proform, Epic and Reebok.
Image home ellipticals can be found in discount store chains and online. And with most of these ellipticals coming in under $500, they can seem like a good buy.
But are they really a good value? Here's what you need to know:
Strengths:
1) Affordable - Most Image units are under $500 which make them affordable for the home gym on a budget. They're also fairly easy to find although not as plentiful as they used to be.
2) Ramp - There are a few Image units - like the Image 9.5 elliptical - that do offer manual ramp. This is similar to incline in that it changes the slope of your elliptical motion and helps you crosstrain different muscles.
Note that most Image units do not come with Ramp. The ones that do use manual (not power) ramp so you have to get off the machine to adjust it.
3) EKG Heart Rate Monitor - Most Image home ellipticals do offer some sort of heart rate monitor. This helps you stay in your target heart rate zone.
Weaknesses:
Unfortunately there are several red flag weaknesses here:
1) Poor Quality of Construction - No one - not even ICON - can make a strong, stable elliptical at this price point. The warranties are very short (90 days) which gives you minimal protection.
And the user weight capacities are also very low (which means they aren't built to take a lot of strain). Basically expect some wobbling on these units if you pick up the pace.
