What To Know Before You Buy
Strengths:

Narrow Pedals For A More Comfortable Feel - While several home ellipticals are now offering it, this does help to give you a more natural feel.  The pedals are optimally spaced to minimize the lateral hip shifting that could put stress on your lower back and cause strain.

Sport-Specific Training - The CoachZone feature offers GluteToner™ and ArmToner™ Workouts Enhancements that coaches you to train different muscle groups. So if you're looking to target one area in particular you can with this elliptical. There are also other built-in workouts like Hill, Random, EZ Resistance to keep you challenged as well.

20 Inch Stride - A longer stride helps you work your leg muscles more fully and also gives you a more comfortable, natural feeling stride.

WhisperStride technology - This is a unique-to-LifeFitness design feature that helps to give you a smooth, quiet ride. Many cheaper department store elliptical can give you a bumpy, jerky feeling ride. And you definitely do not get that with the X3. When we tried we found is smooth and quiet.

Wireless Heart Rate - You have 2 options to monitor your heart rate. Use the wireless chest strap (which tends to be more accurate) or use the grip sensors on the stationary handlebar at the front of the machine. There are even workout programs that use your heartrate feedback to keep you in your target zone.

Weaknesses:

The price may be a bit steep for many people. While the LifeFitness X3 is definitely a high quality machine, you're still paying for the name. Also, the warranty is not as long as other brands that costs thousands less - you'd expect a longer warranty at this price point.

Conclusion:

The Life Fitness X3 elliptical trainer is definitely a high quality machine. It feels smooth and natural when you ride it. The console is backlit and easy to read. And the construction quality is high.

However for this price, you'd expect that. You're also probably paying a premium for the name.

If you don't care about the Life Fitness name, you might want to look at the Sole E95 which also gives you high quality construction but with a longer warranty, 40 degree incline, higher user weight capacity and iPod dock with speakers.
