Smooth Ellipticals are made by Smooth Fitness . Smooth was one of the first fitness equipment makers to sell direct to consumers online at up to 45% off store prices.
Ranging from $1299 to $1999, these ellipticals fall into the mid-priced elliptical range and offer several features which are similar to commercial models.
The Smooth CE 2.1 ($1299) offers a pivoting foot pedal, 18" stride, 16 resistance levels, electromagnetic braking, upper body arms, handgrip pulse sensors, and a heavy 300 pound user weight capacity.
The Smooth CE 7.4 ($1999) offers the longest stride we've seen - 21", along with a pivoting foot pedal for proper knee-hip-ankle alignment, heavy flywheel (makes a smoother ride), club-style console, 16 resistance levels, and wireless heart rate control.
Strengths:
Ergonomic Pivoting Foot Pedals - These pedals mimic the natural motion of your ankle and hold the proper alignment keeping your ankle, knee and hip from suffering impact. This can give you less of the muscle strain and soreness that you sometimes get with cheaper ellipticals.
Highly Stable - One sign of the stability of an elliptical is seen in how high a user weight capacity it offers. Smooth models have weight capacities of 300-350 lbs (excellent for this price point).
Also most are built with heavier flywheels. This is similar to commercial ellipticals, giving you a very stable, smooth ride.
Longer Stride Lengths - Many cheaper ellipticals will come with a short 14"-16" stride length which results in a less effective workout. However Smooth models start at 18" and range up to 21" stride lengths - giving you a more efficient workout. Taller people will especially appreciate the Smooth CE 7.4 with the 21" stride.
Excellent Warranties - With a lifetime warranty on the frame and electromagnetic brake, 2 - 5 years on the parts and electronics and 1 year on service, this is one of the better warranties out there and tells you about the quality of construction.
High Expert and User Reviews - This includes a Consumer Guide recommendation and an average of 4 out of 5 stars from user reviews.
Summary:
Smooth ellipticals offer a higher grade of construction than many economy brands. They are German designed and highly stable without taking up much room.
They are well rated by users and experts, offer quiet operation and long warranties. They also offer some of the longest stride lengths (up to 21") on the market.
Where To Buy:
You can usually save on these ellipticals by buying direct from the Smooth manufacturer. The often offer free shipping and you can usually save on sales tax as well.
